The International Context
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an international agreement that 192 countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom, have signed up to. The Convention gives all children and young people under the age of 18 years old their own set of rights or “articles”. Article 12 of the UNCRC (United Nation Convention on rights of the Child) states that:
“Children and young people have the right to express opinions on matters which affect them and to have those opinions taken seriously.”
The Welsh Assembly Government takes the UNCRC very seriously, and is committed to working with partners to develop a national strategic approach to raising awareness of the Convention and enabling children and young people in Wales to access their rights and entitlements. This commitment is demonstrated by the way the Welsh Assembly Government involves children and young people in forming policies, and in planning and developing services. Young people have also been involved in key appointments – such as the Children’s Commissioner for Wales.
In this section of the site you can download a UNCRC Toolkit and a Quiz to help you understand the UNCRC and how it affects your pupils.
