The National Context
The Welsh Assembly Government has demonstrated its commitment to children and young people’s participation in a number of key policy documents. You can find out more about some of these to date by clicking on the hyperlinks below.
There are also a number of structures in place in Wales which support children and young people’s participation, nationally and locally. On this section of the site, you can download a PowerPoint slide showing the main structures, and read more about the organisations involved in promoting and developing participation. You can also download a diagram showing where School Councils fit within wider participation.
School Councils (Wales) Regulations 2005 made it a requirement for all schools in Wales to have a school council in place by 1st November 2006, and laid down some specific requirements which schools must follow. These Regulations were followed in October 2006 by more detailed Guidance for Governing Bodies on the Establishment and Operation of School Councils. Further statutory Guidance is presently out for consultation, which aims to support schools in promoting and developing pupil participation as an essential element of an effective school.
