Anti Bullying week at Cornist Park
What we did:
We took part in an antibullying week as antibullying was part of the school SDP and one of the action plans for phase 3 of the Healthy Schools Scheme.
Our objectives were to:
- Raise awareness of the effects of bullying
- Educate pupils and parents about bullying and develop anti bullying strategies
- Write/update a new anti bullying policy for parents and a child friendly version for pupils.
How we did it:
Below are some of the activities which took place:
- Class poetry competition about bullying. Work was displayed on whole school ‘anti bullying’ display board
- The school council suggested that each class had a ‘bully box’ in class. This was a place that children could voice their concerns/problems/questions. Teachers used the contents of the ‘bully box’ to ‘steer’ their PSE/circletime that week in class
- Each class produced a suggestion page by placing post it notes to suggest ways to combat bullying. These were given to the school council for designing the child friendly antibullying policy
- A copy of the antibullying policy was sent home and a parental comment box was placed in the school foyer to allow parents the opportunity to comment on the policy
- The school council created a child friendly antibullying policy which is displayed in all classrooms and uses a variety of thinking skills
- The school council consulted all classes for ideas and suggestions for their policy
Outcomes:
Children evaluated the child friendly antibullying policy using a variety of thinking skills such as two stars and a wish and PMI. The feedback from staff, parents and children were very positive. The children are now more informed about bullying and the appropriate actions to take if they or someone they know is bullied. The inclusion of staff, governors, parents and children has given the policy a very positive impact.
