SENTW - New rights for children

A new law in Wales has given children the right to make a Special Educational Needs Appeal and a Disability Discrimination Claim to the Special Educational Needs Tribunal for Wales (SENTW). Before, only parents had this right.

The new rights are going to be tested in two Local Authority areas – Wrexham and Carmarthenshire. From Spring 2012 children and young people in these areas will be able to make appeals and claims themselves to SENTW. After the test it is likely that children and young people from the whole of Wales will be given the same rights.

This does not affect parents’ rights. Parents still have the same rights to make appeals and claims to SENTW.

At SENTW, we are working on a new Information pack and forms for children, parents and case friends and a new website. We expect that all of this will be ready by Spring 2012. So please keep checking our website for news and updates.
