Children's Council in Monmouthshire

3 children around a table with heart paper shapesChildren from 22 schools around Monmouthshire attended the third annual Children’s Council Event, held in County Hall, Cwmbran on Thursday 5th October 2006.

Children aged from 6 to 11 years were given the opportunity to tell County Councillors, Partnership members and workers what they want from their services.

During the event 90 children were encouraged to voice their views on three key issues, these were based on the most common issues that the children had raised during various consultation exercises. These included: Parks and Play facilities, The Environment and Healthy School Dinners. As well as these three popular topics, the children were given the opportunity to question County Councillors about various issues that affect them at a Councillor Question Time, which took place in the Council Chamber.

Children seated at the Welsh AssemblyThe teachers discussed the role of ‘School Councils’ and learned about various techniques of getting children’s views, with a facilitator from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The information gathered from the children throughout the day was put into a report. This report was sent out to all attendees, including a user -friendly summary document for all the children that attended. Children have also received update newsletters of things that have happened or not happened as a result of them having a say at the event.
