New materials give pupils a stronger voice
New online materials to encourage more vulnerable young people in special schools and pupil referral units to participate in decision-making were launched on 29th March in the Pierhead Building, Cardiff Bay by the Deputy Minister for Children, Huw Lewis AM.
Over 80 short video clips are now available on the Pupil Voice Wales web-site, showing how children and young people can become more involved in decision making. They also illustrate how participation can improve a young person’s experience of their learning environment, and of learning itself.
Huw Lewis said: “Giving children and young people the chance to participate in making decisions can make a real difference not only to their educational experience but also to the impact children and young people can have in their communities .
“These exciting new materials send really important messages about how young people like to learn, and the positive role they can play in their school and wider community if they get the right opportunities and support.”
The new materials can be found at:
Over 80 people attended the event, including young people from special schools across South and Mid Wales. The young people took great pride in seeing their achievements captured on the big screen. One headteacher commented that this was the first time in her career that she had seen special schools being put first.
This is a living resource, and pupil referral units and special schools are invited to add to the materials so that good practice is increasingly shared across Wales.
